Saturday Jan 23, 2010. BCD's first Annual Banquet was a great success. Thanks to all that helped make this happen. Rick Allen was our guest speaker and he is a world reknown videographer. He gave a great presentation on ship wrecks he has worked on as well as a great presentation and video of the "Queen Ann's Revenge" here in NC. He was very interesting and everyone enjoyed his presentation. The service and food was great at Parizade's of Durham. We will be posting pics soon. We also held the results of the BCD Photo Contest. Arnie Weksler was the overall best of show. We also presented a "boat coat" to Mike Mantell our outgoing president for that last 2 years. Mike will remain a member of the board and has agreed to help us find a new president. We will be presenting the winners and their pics on the BCD web site soon. We did sell out the banquet. Thanks, to all involved Thursday Nov 12th. We held our first meeting at Champps at the Streets of South Point. Our guest speaker was Dr John Bruno from UNC. John gave a great presentation on the problems with the coral reefs around the world. It was very insightful and who knew we had so many brainiacks in the club?!? The participation from the club members was incredible. The topic did excite people to ask a lot of very interesting questions. And yes folks, there is HOPE! we will definately ask John back again for an update in the future. The service at Champps was excellant in my eyes. The location was the right size. There was terrible weather so there were only 27 people there but we did meet some new members. Thanks to all that came. We also discussed the election of officers but since no one was running opposed there was not an election. A list of the new officers will be posted on the web site soon. Thursday Oct 8th. BCD held a "Year in Review" meeting to talk about the things we have done as a club over the past few years. Mike Mantell had a nice presentation with a slide show of all the events that were held recently. Since a large amount of our members where on the trip to Fiji the attendance was down but it was still a great meeting. Brett Russ gave a presentation on the trip to Cozumel over the Labor day week. The meeting was held at Piazza Italia in the "big" room. We didnt need it but it will be a great room in the future. Sat Sep 26th. This was the WW/BCD Fall Party. It was also the first annual Chili Cook-off! We had 13 contestants and the bragging rights went to Jenna Mantell. She won $100 and a Certificate. The Runner-up was Betsy Adcock. This was a lot of fun and we plan on doing this again next year. Many of our customers brought in side dishes and deserts. We thank everyone that participated. It was a real success. Wednesday Aug 12th. We joined our meeting with DAN at their building in Durham. We were fed with pizza and soda and was entertained by Pete Nawrocky from Dive Rite on the CCR (Closed Circuit Rebreathers). The presentation opened some of our eyes to how difficult rebreather systems are. DAN staff also gave away door prizes that seemed to be won by almost everyone there. We appreciate the evening provided to us by DAN staff and are looking forward to other presentations in the future. Saturday July 11th. We held our first annual "Night at the Quarry". We had approx 13 people plus Water World's AOW class at Lake Rawlings. We camped out and did a night dive in the quarry. Thanks to Mike and Janet, and Ashley for setting this up. We had "somemores" by the camp fire, and told ghost stories, real ghost stories! We had a great time and are looking forward to doing this again next year. Thursday, July 9th. We held our meeting at the Piazza Italia for the first time. The presentation was from David Katzenmeyer and Wally Diehl. It was a travelogue on Utila and the Aqua Cat Bahamas live-a-board. It was very insightful and entertaining. The big news is that we drew for the 2009 Raffle this night and Ashley Perry won! We conratulate Ash and thank all that participated. It was a fun night. This weekend we will hold our first "Night at the Quarry" in Lake Rawlings, VA. Saturday June 13th. The Annual BCD/Water World "Kick-off the Season" Picnic took place at Rolesville Quarry. We had about 30 people showup including WW Staff, BCD members, Board members, and most important a group of "New" divers doing their certification! we also met a new diver to the area, Mike Sims, who lives way south of us. He will be joing as well! The conditions were ok, 74 degrees at the surface, thermacline at about 25 feet. The weather was great and Mike Mantell cooked up a great lunch and thanks to all that brought food and tents! It made for a great time. Thursday May 14th. Neal Pollack was our speaker tonight and he gave a great presentation on "Diving in Antarctica". Since this is on my "Bucket List" I was really impressed with the presentation. The food was great as usual as was the service at Bennett Point Grill. Barbara Lothian won the 50/50 raffle. We had 34 people at this meeting. Our attendance keeps getting better and better. Thanks, everyone! Thursday April 9th. Was not there so I cant say much! But I heard it was great! Saturday March 21. The annual Spring Party and Pig Pickin' was held. It was a great party. There were a lot of our members there as well as customers of Water World. This year the party was planned and run by the club. Next time you see a board member, stop them and thank them for the effort. It was a great party! The live band was "The Durham Jazz Orchestra". They were fantastic. They played throughout the night. The food was really great, especially the chicken prepared by Wayne Wilson. We has approx 134 people that night! Thursday Feb 12, 2009. This was a great meeting, as I was told (first Meeting I have ever missed). Joe Poe was the presenter and he enlightened us on the history of the "U701". We held this meeting at the Bennett Pointe Bar & Grill. The food was fantastic as was the dervice. We had approx 30 people show up. That was a nice surprise. Lets keep it up!!!!!
